Worldwide, 1.3 billion people either do not have access to electricity or have limited access to unreliable electricity; of this number more than 400 million are in India.

Current forecasts predict that this number will remain roughly unchanged until 2030.

One potential game changer is the development of Smart Communities is an idea similar to the more familiar Smart Cities.

The training is designed to give early career and postdoctoral researchers a critical understanding of the main concerns related to the emerging idea of smart communities that will see the simultaneous presence and interactions of intermittent distributed generation, demand side response, energy storage, multi-energy networks, smart devices and new business/cooperative models.
